Best time to visit the Ghibli Museum (month by month)

Two different questions

"Best time" is really two questions. One is the nicest time to be there, which comes down to weather, daylight and what Inokashira Park looks like on the walk in. The other is the easiest time to get a ticket, which comes down to the Japanese holiday calendar, the day of the week and the entry hour. They overlap in autumn. They pull apart in spring, when the blossom and the school holidays arrive together.

Spring

Cherry blossom in Inokashira Park runs from late March to early April, and the park is very busy while it lasts. The same weeks are the Japanese spring school holiday, so tickets go quickly. If blossom is the point of the trip, be on the release for both March and April (10 February and 10 March) and put weekday afternoons first on your list.

Golden Week follows on 29 April to 5 May, a domestic travel peak. The rest of May sits outside the peaks.

Summer

The rainy season runs from early June to mid-July. The museum is indoors apart from the rooftop and the café terrace, and the rooftop closes in bad weather, so a wet day can mean no Robot Soldier. Late July and August are hot and humid, with highs of 30 to 35 °C, and they coincide with the summer school holidays (late July to the end of August) and Obon in mid-August. For availability that is the worst stretch of the year. September is typhoon season but has no holiday peak.

In summer the 15-minute walk from Mitaka Station is the hot part of the day. The community bus from the south exit runs every 15 minutes.

Autumn

October and November are mild and mostly dry, with highs around 22 °C in October and 17 °C in November. Autumn colour at Inokashira Park runs from mid-November into early December. Nothing on the domestic calendar in these two months is a full holiday week, only single national holidays: Sports Day on Monday 12 October 2026, Culture Day on Tuesday 3 November (a Tuesday, so the official calendar decides whether the museum opens) and Labour Thanksgiving Day on Monday 23 November. Shichi-Go-San, when families take children in kimono to shrines, falls around 15 November. If you have one month to choose, choose November, and if you can, a weekday in the second half of it.

Winter

December to February is cold, dry and clear, with highs around 10 to 12 °C and lows near 1 to 4 °C. The clear skies suit the rooftop and the walk through the park. The catch is daylight. Sunset in December is around 16:30, so a 15:00 entry leaves you an hour or so of light on the roof and a 16:00 entry leaves you almost none.

The year-end and New Year holidays, about 29 December to 3 January, are a domestic peak, and the museum has closed over that period in recent years. Winter school holidays run from about 25 December to 7 January. Check the official calendar before you plan anything between Christmas and the first week of January.

From mid-January to the end of February there is no holiday peak, only single days: Coming of Age Day on Monday 11 January 2027, National Foundation Day on Thursday 11 February and the Emperor's Birthday on Tuesday 23 February. If a ticket matters more to you than the weather, this is the stretch to aim for.

Is a weekday or a weekend better?

Weekends usually go first at every release. Weekday afternoons in the shoulder months are the slots that stay available longest. Deciding your backup dates in advance, with at least one weekday among them, is the single biggest factor in getting in. Tuesdays are closed, so that means a Monday, a Wednesday, a Thursday or a Friday.

Which entry time should you choose?

Choose an earlier entry for a quieter visit, or a late-afternoon entry if getting a ticket matters more.

Entry times run every hour from 10:00 to 16:00 and there is no set exit time, so people who came in at 10:00 can still be there when the 14:00 entry arrives. Earlier entries tend to be quieter, and the 10:00 entry is usually the first slot to go on any date. Late-afternoon entries are the easiest to get, and in most months that is a fair trade. In midwinter it costs you the rooftop in daylight.

When is the Ghibli Museum closed?

Tuesdays are normally closed. When a national holiday lands on a Tuesday, such as Culture Day on 3 November 2026 or the Emperor's Birthday on 23 February 2027, the official calendar decides whether the museum opens. The museum also closes for maintenance periods and has closed over the year-end and New Year holidays in recent years. The calendar at ghibli-museum.jp is published roughly a year ahead and is the final word.

How far ahead should you choose your dates?

Choose your dates before the 10th of the month before your visit.

Whatever month you choose, its tickets are released all at once, at 10:00 JST on the 10th of the previous month. November's tickets go on sale on 10 October. In practice that means you need to know your month, and ideally your first-choice and backup dates, before the 10th of the month before it.

If you are torn between the second half of November for colour and the first half of December for quiet, that is a decision for early October, not late November.
